When someone talks about an engineer, any type of engineer, you would generally envision an engineer as a man. I’m a female who has worked as a chemical engineer for seven years. All through my college years and my career, I have worked mainly with engineers who were males. So when I decided to learn to become a recording engineer, I expected to work in the same environment. I’m currently interning at a recording studio in New York, and the atmosphere with the engineers is generally the same as anywhere else that I had worked. The first thing they ask you is why did you get into this field. Almost like, it is strange for a woman to be interested in recording. It takes a long time for a male engineer to gain respect in this business but takes female engineers just as long. If you are good at your craft and you get results in a timely manner, then in time they will respect you as an engineer and not just a female recording engineer.
