Panist A native of Trinidad & Tobago, Ricardo Greenaway comes from a family of musicians. With this influence, it was only natural that Ricardo would become a steel pan player. Following in the footsteps of his mentor Venice “Snags” Villaruel, Ricardo started his formal steel pan education at Malick Senior Comprehensive School in Trinidad and went on to become a member of Solo Harmonites steel band at the age of sixteen. He made his debut in the 1983 School Music Festival (Trinidad & Tobago) and won his first title in the East Zone Panorama championship with Exodus and successfully went on to win his first national championship with the Amoco Renegades in 1990. Throughout his career Ricardo garnered various awards for his talent and musicianship, and has appeared at venues of note such as the Trinidad Hilton and the Naparima Bowl. He has performed competitively with many bands including Solo Harmonites, Exodus, Cordettes, Amoco Renegades, T&T Police Ensemble, the Manzanilla Police Youth Club, Brooklyn Pan Rebels, Silhouettes, Sonatas and Miami Island Boys. Specializing in contemporary jazz and world music, Ricardo has toured extensively throughout the world as the featured solo performer. In addition, he has appeared on NBC’s Third Watch (April 2001) and ABC’s World News Polka (May 2002). Ricardo's goal is to continue soaring to new musical heights as an accomplished panist. Ricardo Greenaway is set to expand and redefine the limits of the musical voice of the steel pan in popular genres. |
