Diego Martin Pan Institute

Devoted To The Instruction Of Pan Worldwide

When Steel Talks Everybody Listens'

The Diego Martin Pan Institute was founded by Cathy and Clyde, inspired by Lord Kitchener and supported by Bertie Marshall. Clyde 'Lightning' George, an elder of the Laventille Hi-landers Steel Orchestra, met his wife Cathy while performing on the cruise ships in the late '70s. Cathy fell in love with the Man and his pan on a moonlight night hearing Clyde play Bach's "Jesu, joy of man's Desiring". It was love at first note.

Clyde and Cathy enjoyed many panoramas and carnivals and became regulars each year at the Calypso Revue Tent. In 1999 they purchased a home in Trinidad. In 2000, saddened by the death of Kitchener, they decided to use their home and property to honor Kitch and his love of pan, to help keep his legacy alive and to help bring people to Trinidad to learn about pan and the Grandmaster.

Each year, on February 15, as per Kitch's last pan tune, they host the "Pan Birthday" Fete. In 2002, they were honored to share the fun with many of Kitch's family including Mrs Kitch, Valerie Green(the original Sugar Bum Bum), and Kitch's son, Kernal. Entertainers that devoted their time for the show included The Mighty Sparrow, Rootsman, Impulse, the Mighty Bomber, Tempo and Conquerer. It was a wonderful tribute to Kitch and everyone enjoyed "dem Moko Jumbies" dancing to Kitch tunes at the "Backyard Party".  Proceeds from the party went to the Pan Studio Building Fund.

The Institute has begun a collaboration with Chicago's Columbia College Center for Black Music Research and has received a grant to begin the building of the pan studio this September. Currently they accommodate 10 guests and the expansion will add a few more guest rooms. The next seminar will be offered in connection with the World Steelband Festival and the 2nd International Conference on the science and technology of the Steelpan this October. A 2 week tour program and a more intensive 6 week study program are offered with seminars given by Bertie Marshall, Tony Slater, Clifford 'Rope' Alfred, Dr. Anthony Achong. Oscar 'the Fox' Pile, Sterling Betancourt and Clyde 'Lightning' George. Details and further information can be found at www.paninstitute.com.
