Pan Show Reviews CARIBBEAN JAZZ WAVES - Hosted by Dominio Productions on June 29th gets two thumbs up. Featured along with other performers were panists Garvin Blake and Dane Gulston. Garvin Blake's understated brilliance was lauded by the audience. In addition Garvin has set a new bar in performance standards. In the same way that Charlie Parker transformed the saxophone, Garvin has transformed the pan. The transformation is in his touch that distills the "sweetest" sounds of the instruments. His playing represents a refreshing and exciting voice in the world of Jazz instrumentation. Looking forward to his next CD!
Dane Gulston brings youth, love and
excitement to his art of playing Pan. There is no question that he truly
loves to entertain. He creates his own stage as he dances with the
instrument and shows off his command of improvisation and ability to make
folks dance in their seats and on their feet. You certainly can look
to him to inspire youth to play. (He's got groupie potential). Frankie McIntosh
usually exudes a reflective, meditative demeanor but, on Saturday, his
face smiled and I can tell he was truly happy about the performances and
the general atmosphere of Caribbean Jazz Waves. He was in his
element as a band leader and soloist, showing off his unique chord
stylings, classical flourishes and mastery of the Calypso. I spoke
to him during intermission and he said, "Too bad "Boo" wasn't playing
tonight". Yes, he was thinking of Caribbean Jazz Waves as on the
level of the St. Lucia Jazz festival but with a distinct Caribbean flavor.
All that's needed is a beach on Fulton Street. A.H.
