PAN HARMONY
Musical magic at
The Elite Ark

Even though  the steel orchestras did not get a chance to play before 1:00 AM, more than three hours after the advertised 10:00 PM start on Saturday December 14 - due to an earlier-held event not vacating the venue until well after midnight - that there was still a [musical] accord within the USSA (United States Steelband Association) was apparent from the moment ADLIB Steel Orchestra opened up their set.  The youngsters and pan lovers alike gladly got into both the sweet steelband sounds and the spirit of the holiday season.

Billed as Pan Harmony, this is the first official venture of the USSA after the organization's disappointing showing at the New York Panorama 2002.  Acting USSA Chairperson Anthony "Ike" Hinds is confident that it is only a matter of time before the tide turns - for the better - for the organization and therefore for the New York Pan scene.  Of the four steel orchestras slated to appear - ADLIB, Marsicans, Pantonic and Dem Stars, only Marsicans did not appear.

With the audience made up of pan supporters, it was definitely a family event as parents and children appreciatively took in steelband music.  With a mixture of seasonal and year round music, ADLIB finished off their first session.  Next up were Dem Stars, who like ADLIB delivered another mixed bag of musical delights.   Pantonic rounded out the first round of the bands' performances.   All three steel orchestras came back for a second musical round, with ADLIB and Dem Stars living up to expectations, and Pantonic showing a pleasantly augmented repertoire, to finish up 'Pan Harmony' at the spacious Elite Ark.
