"I love my country so much but it hurts me because I can't live there for more than a few months, tops! I have seen so many young Steelpan players with far more natural talent than myself, subjected to playing on the streets or at hotels where no one really listens. I know that many people may be angry with some of the things that I say but I am only dealing with the reality of what I have witnessed...

DESPERS Bolt from
U.S.S.A. On a bright and sunny Friday afternoon sweet pan music emanates from the Despers U.S.A. Steel Orchestra panyard on Classon Avenue in B'klyn. President of Despers' U.S.A.- Clement Franklin sits on a bench adjacent to the entrance gate practicing a tune while fellow band mates converse amongst themselves.

Bernice Moses, 55, stands in the P.S. 91 school yard in the East New York section of Brooklyn doing what she loves. Gazing intently at her Caribbean American Sports and Cultural Youth Movement (C.A.S.Y.M.) Steel Orchestra practicing at a distance, Moses takes special interest in the young people that the band is mostly comprised of.

Re-evaluating the
racial, musical and cultural stereotypes and boundaries of the
steelband world
The stereotypical image of a steelband is one of smiling afro-caribbeans in straw hats and hawaiian shirts playing Yellow Bird on a palm-fringed beach. The repertoire should be a mixture of Harry Belafonte songs, traditional folk songs, reggae and pretty calypso melodies. This image is at best misguided, and at worst demeaning and offensive... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
STEELBAND In The 1990's During the 1990s, three steelbands received the Trinidad & Tobago Chaconia Medal Gold for their cultural contributions: Desperadoes (1992); Renegades (1992); and Invaders (1996). Internationally, the con-tributions of Elliott Mannette, the accomplished pan tuner, were recognized in 1992 when he became an Artist in Residence at West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia, USA, where he continued to teach music students how to play and tune pans through the turn of the century... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WELCOME TO BASEMENT'S X-THEATRE

NAIPAUL IN THE Finally, (to my relief) he [Clem -Captain of Despers USA] wanted to know if anyone other than a panist could tell the real story of pan's encounter with America? Can you? Further/more, he wondered if the temporary "fascination" with Despers was simply because it was - what some view as - "on top", having won the last five Panoramas. (At the 1998 Panorama, Despers U.S.A. made it six in a row!).

There are not too many working class com-munities that can claim to be the creators of a musical instrument. Yet, it is believed that the working class industrial district of Laventille, a low-income African community on the hilly urban area of East Port of Spain, can proudly claim to be the birthplace of the only musical instrument of the 20th century...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For the first time since September 2000 - when CASYM Steel Orchestra unseated then-reigning Panorama champs Pantonic Steel Orchestra to capture first place, forcing Pantonic to settle for second place that year - these two steel bands met in a musical arena on a stage set by Radoes Steel Orchestra at Panville Gardens, Lincoln Road in Brooklyn, on Sunday 11 August 2002 .

During the 1960's, family members migrated to the United States. The younger family members decided on a 'rebirth'. Thus, Dem Stars Steel Orchestra - this time in Brooklyn - was reborn in 2000 in New York, with the same structure as the original Dem Stars in Trinidad in the 1950s. The members are family and friends. Under the leadership of Anthony 'Ike' Hinds, the band has become a force in the New York steel band world.
