~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Even though the steel orchestras did not get a chance to play before 1:00 AM, more than three hours after the advertised 10:00 PM start - due to an earlier-held event not vacating the venue until well after midnight - that there was still a [musical] accord within the USSA (United States Steelband Association) was apparent from the moment ADLIB Steel Orchestra opened up their set.
Mikey Enoch was one of the few remaining of a unique breed of panmen - from a different era. He was a Tuner, Arranger and Player, and also one of the most influential tuners on the New York pan scene. Mikey shared his many priceless recollections and knowledge and interacted with, participants at a Basement Recordings-held workshop a few years ago. This is not an interview, but an audio recording of that session.
When Steel Talks chats with a unique and petite powerhouse of a woman who remains behind the scenes and prefers to keep it that way. But Glenda Ford-Gamory leads what is arguably the best steelband on the North American continent- Pantonic Steel Orchestra; and is now living her dream of many years. She always wanted to be the first woman to lead a Steel Orchestra to the Panorama and win - and she did this in 2001 and 2002 in New York with winning arrangements from Clive Bradley. Along with her experience as Pantonic's leader and what it takes to bring out a steel orchestra usually more than one-hundred [players] strong Glenda talks about her younger days in Trinidad, hanging out with the pan players in what was a male dominated pan scene, and her relationship with the man known as the 'Hammer' - Rudolph Charles - and the impact he had on her life.
The year was 1949, and the music scene in America would never be the same. That is the year that Rudy King, aka 'Rock' and 'Rudolph Carter' - (to those who knew him as a young boy/man in his native Trinidad) came to America, bringing with him the knowledge of manufacturing and playing the instrument now known worldwide as the Steelpan.
