NEW YORK PAN YARDS - 2003

PANS COME OUT TO PLAY-

A couple of the bands delivered not only soca hits, but con-ventional 'standards' in calypso tempo as well, such as Trini Pan America Pan Groove with Roberta Flack's Feel Like Makin' Love.

Dem Stars - through 'Rain' and Shine at the 21st Annual Kings County Health Fair

Barely kept dry by the light yellow rain poncho she wore, Roxanne was a sight to behold with umbrella in one hand, as she undauntedly played with one pan stick in the other! As the umbrella collapsed she simply played through the rain...

'VIBRATIONS IN STEEL'
capture hearts and minds

Steelband lovers did not have to wait until 'well into' the New York Pan season to be treated to sounds of steel. What could be regarded as the official launch was Vibrations in Steel, a Sunday May 25, 2003 'afternoon into evening' experience in Brooklyn, that caused many a musical movement in the very souls of those fortunate enough to be in attendance.

PHASE II PAN GROOVE SETS THE STAGE FOR PANYARD SENSATIONS
by Peter Ray Blood

Had the price of admission been US$100, patrons would have still had change for Tidco, Len “Boogsie” Sharpe and Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove after last Friday night’s Panyard Sen-sations. Attended by the largest crowd I have ever seen at the Phase II Hamilton Street panyard, the Woodbrook steel orchestra and its guest performers treated patrons to a delectable serving of vintage entertainment.

Pelham Goddard
The Quiet Giant
Monster Musician & Arranger

Pelham remembers that 'when the rhythm got the better of him' and he 'beat' it out on the school benches, punishment followed because of the noise he created.  Pelham's career in pan started one year later when he went to 'hangout' in Starlift's pan yard one night with his brother, and ended up playing a 'Five bass'.

SKIFFLE BUNCH AND ART IN NEW YORK

By Yvelle Lazare
BASEMENT PRESS

It was only natural for soca singing group 3 Canal and calypso singer Black Stalin, both accompanied by Skiffle Bunch Steel Pan Orchestra (whose coed musicians were coordinately dressed in their home country’s flag colors of red, white and black) to serenade us through the night.

NEVILLE JULES
pioneer, innovator, arranger, & noted leader - CHATS with
When Steel Talks

Noted leader and founder of the legendary Trinidad All Stars Neville Jules, invented the first Bass Pan, and is known today, and is the 'Father' of the Bass Pan.  Trinidad All Stars was a band of great discipline under Jules, but also "special" - so much so that Trinidad and Tobago's first Prime Minister - Dr. Eric Williams, favoured the band, and selected All Stars for his three children to enjoy a carefully monitored "taste of steelband".

A Dream Coming True…
Pan in the Schools of Trinidad and Tobago!

by Patricia Doughlin

The new Pan in Schools Co-ordinating Council (PSCC) was established in June 1999. This body has been given the mandate by Pan Trinbago and the Ministry of Education to proceed with the implementation of a structured programme for the curriculum and development of Pan in Schools. The pilot project proposed is to introduce pan on the curriculum of at least one hundred schools by September of 2003!  Preparations are under way for the 11th Biennial School Steelbands Festival in October 2003, starting with a competition for a Test Piece composition.  The theme of this year’s festival is “A Heritage of Folk Music”.

 Andy Narell

by Tasha Morris
BASEMENT PRESS

There’s nothing in the world like Trinidad at carnival time and I love being there and taking part, putting together a piece for 100 players, rehearsing for weeks and bringing the music to the Savannah. I will always feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to do that.  And I have to admit I've always enjoyed the controversy created by the music I did.

PAthmark and Pan - celebrating the heritage of Brooklyn's West Indian community

There were of course mall visitors who were not familiar with steel orchestras and they in particular stopped in amazement to take stock of the phenomenon before them - steelband stage sides with some twenty members; definitely different from the 'one pan man in the subway' stereotype which persists in the minds of many.

 'Musical Tapestry'

It is an art form in itself where the pan players or pannists themselves create their own musical 'tapestries' with all genres of music - and this is exactly what the stage side of the Skiffle Bunch Steelband Orchestra from Trinidad did as they greeted the evening's guests as they entered, and into the night.
