Re-evaluating the
racial, musical and cultural stereotypes and boundaries of the
steelband world
The stereotypical image of a steelband is one of smiling afro-caribbeans in straw hats and hawaiian shirts playing Yellow Bird on a palm-fringed beach. The repertoire should be a mixture of Harry Belafonte songs, traditional folk songs, reggae and pretty calypso melodies. This image is at best misguided, and at worst demeaning and offensive... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
STEELBAND In The 1980's In 1987, the steelband association Pan Trinbago, was awarded a Trinidad & Tobago Trinity Cross for its outstanding organizational work in representing the steelbands. Lord Kitchener's calypsoes were the winning selections of four Panorama winners in the 1980s. ADLIB'S DEBUT CD! THEY'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN... WHAT A COMING OUT... Adlib Steel Orchestra's long-anticipated debut CD is a fait accompli. It was unveiled triumphantly at the USSA's pan launch last Sunday... The aptly entitled "We've Only Just Begun" CDs were eagerly snapped up by fans from very proud young Adlib musicians who made the most of the pan launch's sale opportunities... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Brooklyn Backyard Boogie
It’s a cool Sunday evening in July, and revelers are filing into a cramped Brooklyn backyard on 112 Veronica Place. They’re all intent on enjoying the company of close friends and family while being splashed with steel from the Marsicians Steel Orchestra. It’s a “Calypso and Steel Band Lunching” sponsored by the Marsicians, and as Pan-O-Rama draws near, the rest of the steel bands on hand are fine tuning their skills to ensure that they leave an indelible mark on this year’s competition. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In 1987, two young men met in a pan yard and formed a lasting friendship which led them ultimately to form their own band. Collins Jackman and Lyndon Spencer were drawn together by a love of music and a passion for pan. Throughout the years, this has enabled these very different men to realize some of their aspirations, one of which was to start a steel band. Jackman and Spencer started playing together in Metro Steel Orchestra and have been together since. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
