STEELBAND In The 1970's
by Ronald C. Emrit

This decade brought significant physical changes:

New instruments with more drums were developed. Rudolph Charles of the Desperadoes Steelband was the biggest innovator of new instruments when he introduced the nine-bass, the rocket bass, the quadrophonic pan, and the triple tenor. He also introduced chromed pans and attempted to improve acoustics on the road with aluminum canopies.

The transport of instruments on the road during Carnival went from separate supports for each instrument to multiple-instrument racks that were drawn by tractors. Racks limited the mobility of steelbands on the road and eventually altered their influence on Carnival.

PAN NEWS FROM TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
 Compiled by Roger James

The most significant news on pan.  Mr. James is a Canadian-born Trini that had been playing pan on/off for the last 20 years. He mainly played the double second but has played both tenor and bass. By profession he is a Computer Technician/ Web Designer and in his spare time enjoys fishing, traveling and cooking.

CLIVE BRADLEY
by Knolly Moses

His preferred drink is rum and coke, though he sips a beer in the pan tent this particular night. Standing a slight five feet three inches in sandals, he peers through round, brown glasses. Cigarette smoke punctuates every word of his flat, nearly monotone voice. And while he engages in lively repartee with band members, he does not tolerate skylarking. "You are losing concentration," he warns an embarrassed double second pan player.

PAN SPOTLIGHT

Diego Martin Pan Institute

The Diego Martin Pan Institute was founded by Cathy and Clyde, inspired by Lord Kitchener and supported by Bertie Marshall.  Clyde 'Lightning' George, an elder of the Laventille Hi-landers Steel Orchestra, met his wife Cathy while performing on the cruise ships in the late '70s.  Cathy fell in love with the Man and his pan on a moonlight night hearing Clyde play Bach's "Jesu, joy of man's Desiring".  It was love at first note.

"THE BOX AND ONE" -- BASEMENT RECORDINGS ESTABLISHES A NEW FRONTIER CAPTURING AND REPRODUCING PANORAMA PART TWO
by
Augustin Hinkson

The goal in mixing the recorded tracks of a steel band is three fold: 1) to recreate the environment in which the band played; 2) to preserve the placement of the instruments within that environment and; 3) to uphold the intentions of the arranger in terms of the overall balance of sound of the band, the clarity of communicating sections of the band, the dynamic movement of sound, and the musical statement that pronounces creative thought.
