Max Roach is
one of the most influential drummers in jazz history. Roach was one of the
founding fathers of the Be-Bop style of jazz; and jazz aficionados such as
Charlie 'Bird'
Parker,
Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis,
John Coltrane,
Thelonious Monk
and
Sonny Rollins
have been honored to share the stage with the great
Max Roach. Max Roach has been to Panorama in Trinidad, and provided Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe with the opportunity to put Pan on the world stage when he took Boogsie along on tours with him to Washington and Italy. The link will take you to a live Basement audio interview with Max on 22 February 2002 as he reviewed the USSA NY Panorama 2001 double CD.
Smiling and waving politicians who parade up and down Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway, declare themselves honorary West Indians for the day on Labor Day-) especially as it's close to election time!) and enjoy the photo opportunities afforded - generally did not return the urgent calls this week from New York pan players who are being thrown out on the streets with no notice.

Utopia
Pan Soul:
The Next Generation -
in an exclusive
interview with 'When Steel Talks' Sheldon Elcock and Curt Rogers are presently about taking the steelpan out of the rut they see it's been in for decades by emphasizing music education - through theory, workshops and exposure of their young players to other professionals in the music world, and by the ongoing expansion of the band's repertoire to include all types of music e.g. R&B, Latin and Afro-centered rhythms... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

THE LONGTIME STEELBAND This type of panist does not belong to any particular steelband. The 'crackshot' is very talented and sells his or her skills to any steelband for the Panorama competition when they play for two or four steelbands during the finals. First, they would play for one steelband and when that steelband would finish they would put on another steelband's uniform and play for another steelband. The 'crackshot' is a hired panist. As a result, every year you could find the 'crackshot' in a variety of steelbands...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Specializing in con-temporary jazz and world music, Ricardo Greenaway has toured extensively throughout the world as the featured solo performer. In addition, he has appeared on NBC’s Third Watch (April 2001) and ABC’s World News Polka (May 2002). Ricardo's goal is to continue soaring to new musical heights as an accomplished panist...
On August 31, 2002, Carnival Saturday night, I attended the Panorama competition at Flatlands headed by the USSA - (United States Steelband Association). I was deeply disappointed. I arrived around 8:30 pm. What took place was a journey through hell...
For over 30 years the Trinidadian native and self proclaimed "panologist"
has im-mersed himself in what he calls "a labor of love," diligently
chronicling the history of steel pan music.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A few of the younger pan players from Despers USA huddled together, partly against the chill of the blustery evening, and partly in mutual comfort as they quietly discussed the reality that Mikey would not walk into Despers Pan Loft ever again. Everyone had a story, and private thoughts and experiences with the departed Pan legend...

Pantonic serves up a Hot Musical Mix at the Chile
Pepper Fiesta, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens No stranger to keeping crowds going, PANTONIC delivered two blistering 45-minute servings of steel from 2:00 P.M. and again at 4:00 P.M. at the Gardens' Lilly Pool Terrace in the cool and sunny autumn afternoon. Selection after selection garnered appreciative applause from the pool- side gathering...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sonatas may have had a much more sombre reason to hold a candlelight vigil (and unfortunately probably the entire force of what would have turned out to be probably 100 plus past and present Sonatas pan players with all their pans would have found a way to be present at the musical tribute) - if it were not were for the hand of fate, and the Creator...
This year was even more electric than last, because we were intent on winning this year. We knew we had the material to win, and we knew we had to execute it (and all doubts/biases in the judges' minds!) to the best of our ability. Needless to say, we were quite hyper as we set up on stage...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J'ouvert Morning - Labor Day, New York - WHAT THE RAIN COULD NOT DO... (throw a 'damper' on proceedings), New York's Finest (NYPD) did... The music was ordered stopped, and pans were demanded removed from racks and packed. No explanation was forthcoming, but needless to say revelers were pissed. The West Indian community's J'ouvert Pan lovers got a slap in the face with this one...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pan-O-Rama at New York's Lincoln Center Complex with David "Happy" Williams and Ensemble The 10th floor view of both the Hudson River and city lights was a fitting panoramic backdrop for the majesty of the steel drum instrument, whose range and versatility was showcased in jazz, calypso and contemporary settings in musical interpretations by both Othello Molineaux on tenor pan and Ron Reid on the double second pan. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
to
'f' What should have been a foregone success - with only the i's and t's to be dotted and crossed in write-ups after the event - was essentially an abysmal failure - twenty steps backward from the two made forward last year. This about describes the fiasco termed the USSA 2002 Panorama presented in partnership with the Immigrant's Journal...
