Radoes Steel Orchestra
at the 3rd International Moon Festival

by BASEMENT PRESS

As the sun settled down for the evening, the crowd geared up in anticipation of the 3rd International Moon Festival which is celebrated by multiple Asian nations, as parade participants warmed up for their multicultural show at the Flushing Mall car park in Queens.  Organized by the Flushing Development Center, the festival previously carded for September 13, but cancelled probably due to concerns about inclement weather, was now underway exactly one week later on a glorious Saturday evening.

New York PANORAMA '03 -
Personal Pan perspectives
on some performances...

by Gail Braithwaite

From the time "Trini to the Bone" was played over the PA system, Panorama was essentially over.  With Trinidad's 41st year of independence just hours old, Pantonic couldn't have hoped for a more favorable situation.

The Stars of Harlem Light Up the Night of the 34th Annual African American Day Parade

As Harlem All Stars neared the end of the parade route the presence of the cops became more definitive, as they prepared for the surge of the steelband supporters headed their way. The pan lovers and supporters were determined to enjoy their steelband music to the last moment, but the NYPD was prepared for them.

SWEET STEEL AT THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM

by Nicole Vanderbrook
BASEMENT PRESS

The sheer size of the bands was unmatched throughout the year. The bands, which had during the year peeked at around 30, rose to upwards of 100 members for the Panorama. Every band dressed and coordinated fully. Amazingly this is the only time during the year the steel orchestras would be at their complete capacity.

PANORAMA FASHION '03

If the competition was based on set design, Marsicans Steel Orchestra would have won that competition. Their rendition of Music In We Blood allowed the group lots of leeway in costume design. Marsicans chose to wear full doctor’s scrub attire including mask and footsies. They happily welcomed the audience to the “Marsicans Blood Center”.

PANORAMA 2003
 IN BROOKLYN

by khalick j. hewitt

The Panorama under the auspices of USSA is no more. The attempt by panists and others to organize their own Panorama, while a magnanimous gesture, only lasted two years.  The first being an historic moment in the history of Panorama in Brooklyn and the second a disaster.  But, they were back at the Museum. Only fifteen Steelbands per-formed.

Too Fast or Too Slow?
An introspective

ANALYSIS OF PAN'S HISTORY: NO CAUSE TO JUMP AND WAVE.
by Philip A. John

I read with great interest Collins Jackman's interesting discussion of the forgotten or ignored history which became the crucible for the evolution of the steelband in Trinidad. He also correctly pointed out that analytical depth is missing from even some of the better studies to have been produced on the subject.

NY 2003 Panorama from a PanMan's Perspective
by RAS

Well, everyone knew that Pantonic won panorama by August 28th. The question was which bands would occupy from second place down.  Is like I hear a Radoes man say in Tonic's yard when the band finished rehearsing the night before panorama. "This is advantage." This statement came from the brother's gut.
